The Joys of Buying an Older Home

My dream home was not new construction in a planned community. It was a rambling old structure in a neighborhood that was beginning to recover after years of decline. I got the place for a song and started in on all the tasks associated with restoring it to new glory. I soon found there was a lot to do. While the house was sound, it needed to be fumigated after several years of standing vacant. All the tile needed replacing, and the floors cried out for refinishing. Little by little, I got the place ready for me to move in. Today, I like to think it is the nicest home on the block. If you are thinking of buying a fixer-upper, try my tips. From redoing the wallpaper to choosing the right pest control service, what I learned will save you a lot of time and trouble.

Three Popular Barrel Chair Styles

Barrel chairs, which get their name on account of their rounded shape, can be a good addition to many living rooms. Comfortable and cozy, this seating option is available in several different materials and colors, allowing you to choose what look will be the best fit in your living room. When you visit a local furniture shop that carries lots of barrel chairs, you can expect to see a number of different styles for sale, each of which offers its own benefits. Here are three popular barrel chair styles that you may wish to evaluate.

Closed Bottom

You'll see a lot of barrel chairs that have a closed bottom. This means that they aren't open beneath the seat like many chairs. Instead of having four visible legs, they have a solid base. Some people like this look because it appears more substantial. If you have a larger family member who sometimes feels uncertain about sitting on chairs with small legs, a barrel chair with a closed bottom may make them feel more confident when they're choosing where to sit. In most closed bottom designs, the part of the chair beneath the seat matches the chair's upper part.

Open Bottom

If you want to go in a different direction, focus on barrel chairs that have open bottoms. This overall style is similar to many different chair types, with a seat that sits on four legs. Some people like this style because they can put their feet beneath them when they sit in certain positions — something that isn't possible with a closed bottom barrel chair. Because of the open space beneath this type of chair, the chair doesn't seem as visually dominant in the room. This may appeal to those who don't necessarily want the chair to be a primary focal point.

Double

Most barrel chairs offer seating for one person, but you'll occasionally find designs that are built to accommodate two people. Just as a loveseat sofa offers a cozy seating option for two people who wish to sit close together, a double barrel chair can be a good choice for you and your significant other. Whether you're reading together, watching a movie together, or just snuggling and chatting, you may want this type of chair in your home.
